Search results are now taking a new approach, presented by SGE, Search Generative Experience, affecting how users interact with search engines. Basically, with the AI getting into the game, lots have changed, the first of which is how users get the answers to their questions.

With that being said, SEO experts today take SGE into consideration, maybe even more than keyword research, for its great effect on users’ current behavior.

In this guide, we will dive into the search generative experience and its role when creating your next SEO strategy.

What Is SGE?

In simple words, SGE is a new approach that uses generative artificial intelligence to provide users with quick and precise answers to their questions, without having to go through different pages and websites.

In its essence, SGE gathers the most important information from multiple trusted sources to generate the most comprehensive answer for users, depending on artificial intelligence. I mean, imagine doing your research in 3 minutes rather than half an hour, that’s SGE.

SGE and Google’s AI Overview: Are They the Same?

We have all heard of AI overview and its mind-blowing changes that it has brought to the table. However, a good question arises: what is the relationship between SGE and AI overview?

Mainly, the AI overview evolved from SGE, offering a deeper shift in how results are delivered, with a broader experience for users.

To make it clearer, before, if you searched for “the caffeine effect on health”, you would find several pages and links to check, each one with specific information about caffeine’s impact and the recommended portion for individuals. But now, the search engine will provide you with the following:

The image above is how Google is now using AI overview to provide faster answers, making the search process more efficient and faster, with minimal effort possible.

Benefits of SGE

Google’s new capabilities are a game-changer for how users can find their answers. We can list the main benefits of Google’s generative AI as follows:

  • 1. Simple Overview of Complex Matters

The real benefit of this comes to users who look for a summarized answer for complex topics, or, in other words, when they look for a starting point. For example, you are searching for our topic “SGE” and you are lost in the large number of results and sites. Google uses its AI algorithm to provide a summary for the subject:

Easier, right? Notice that the results are associated with sources of information for a deeper search if you want.

  • 2. Fast Information

Assume that you are overwhelmed with multiple tasks for the day, and as with any other job, yours involves lots of research; instead of spending 20 – 25 minutes researching on one topic, it will take you 5 minutes maximum.

Rather than clicking and reading seven or eight different sites, Google’s generative search feature provides you with an instant answer that you need, taking search intent into account.

  • 3. Interactive and Follow-up

With traditional Google Search, you type in a query, get a list of results, and if you want more details or a different angle, you have to start over with a new search. Each search is separate; there’s no “memory” of your previous question.

With SGE, it works more like a conversation. After your first question, the AI-generated answer appears along with relevant links, and you can ask a follow-up question directly. The AI remembers your context, so it doesn’t start from scratch; it refines the results based on your earlier query.

How to Get Google SGE? And Is It Free to Use

To get Google SGE enabled, you will need:

  • – Open Chrome while you’re signed in to your Google Account
  • – Open a new tab and go to Google
  • – Select the “Labs” icon at the top right of the page. If you can’t find the Labs icon, it’s not available in your country yet. You can check the list of supported countries
  • – Click “Join waitlist” or “Get started” if it’s already open for you
  • – Once in Search Labs, look for “SGE, Generative AI in Search” and toggle it on
  • – Just type a query, and if SGE is active, you’ll see an AI-generated answer box at the top of the results

The good news is that Google’s Search Generative Experience (SGE) is currently free for users who access it via Search Labs or experimental rollout features. However, there’s a catch: Google may introduce paid access in the future. Several reputable reports suggest that advanced AI-powered search capabilities—like richer snapshots and follow-up interactions—could become part of a premium subscription, such as the Google One AI Premium tier (around $19.99/month).

What Does SGE Mean for SEO?

There is a long debate among SEO experts, including us, regarding how SGE and AI overview wil affect SEO. Maybe it’s too soon to tell whether they’re actually harming SEO or not, but they definitely must be taken into consideration when creating your next SEO strategy.

Here is the role of SGE in SEO strategies:

  • 1. Shifts User Behavior Toward AI Summaries

  • SGE approach: Instead of scanning the top 10 blue links, users may first read the AI-generated snapshot at the top of the page.
  • SEO role: Optimize for featured snippets, People Also Ask, and concise, well-structured content, since SGE often pulls from these.

  • 2. Increases the Importance of Topical Authority

  • SGE approach: SGE pulls information from sites it considers authoritative and trustworthy.
  • SEO role: Build EEAT signals (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) through author bios, quality backlinks, and cited sources.

  • 3. Requires Conversational & Contextual Content

  • SGE approach: SGE supports follow-up queries in a conversational flow.
  • SEO role: Write in a natural, Q&A style with subheadings that match likely follow-up questions and add related links to the content.

  • 4. Puts More Focus on Mid & Long-Tail Keywords

  • SGE approach: Conversational search favors detailed, specific queries.
  • SEO role: Target long-tail and intent-driven phrases (“best laptops under $1,000 for design”) rather than only generic keywords.

FAQs

  1. 1. Is Google SGE available in all countries?

No. Google SGE is currently being rolled out gradually and is only available in certain countries through Google Search Labs. If you don’t see the Labs icon in your Google Search, it means SGE is not yet available in your location.

  1. 2. How does SGE choose which sources to use?

SGE gathers information from multiple authoritative and trusted websites. Google’s AI prioritizes sources with strong EEAT (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) signals, ensuring that the generated summary is accurate and reliable.

  1. 3. Will SGE reduce traffic to websites?

It’s possible. Since SGE provides instant summaries, some users may find the answer they need without clicking through. However, if your content is authoritative and cited by SGE, you can still attract targeted traffic and increase brand visibility.

  1. 4. How can I optimize my content for SGE?

Focus on creating high-quality, well-structured, and concise content. Use headings, bullet points, and clear answers to common questions. Incorporate long-tail keywords and ensure your site builds topical authority to increase the chances of being featured in SGE results.
